New 5 Year Multiple Entry Visa to Facilitate Tourism in Indonesia 2024

The Directorate General of Immigration under the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham) has introduced a five-year multiple entry visa policy with indices D1 and D2, simplifying entry for foreigners visiting Indonesia for business and tourism.

Director General of Immigration, Silmy Karim, announced on Thursday (21/12/2023) in Jakarta that the D1 index is for tourism, while the D2 index is for business purposes. Both types of multiple entry visas, effective from December 20, 2023, grant a stay of up to 60 days per visit.

Exploring Indonesia’s New Multiple Entry Visa Policy 2023

As of December 20, 2023, the multiple entry visa policy has expanded to include all foreigners, catering to both business and tourism. This policy will be effective from January 1, 2024.

There are two types of multiple entry visas available:

  • Multiple Entry Visa D1: for tourism
  • Multiple Entry Visa D2: for business

Both visa types have a validity period of five years, allowing foreign nationals holding these visas to stay for 60 days upon each entry.

Requirements for Applying for Multiple Entry Visa:

The new visa registration will mainly require the following documents:

  • Valid passport with a minimum of 18 months validity
  • Recent coloured photograph
  • Proof of visa payment
  • Guarantee letter from a company or institution in Indonesia
  • Other supporting documents as per the visit’s purpose

The application process for multiple entry visas can be completed online through the official website visa-online.imigrasi.go.id or through Indonesian representatives abroad.

Reviving Foreign Visits to Indonesia through Multiple Entry Business Visa

The multiple entry visa policy of 2022, issued by the Directorate General of Immigration of the Republic of Indonesia on November 22, 2022, allows foreigners to enter Indonesia multiple times within one year without reapplying for a visa.

Initially trialled in the Riau Islands (Kepri) on November 28, 2022, this policy was initially only available to Singaporean citizens and permanent residents during the trial period.

In his statement, this Multiple Entry Visa offers convenience for high-mobility foreigners, with an easy online application process at evisa.imigrasi.go.id and payment options through credit cards.

With the implementation of online visa applications in January 2023, the process has become more accessible, eliminating the need for applicants to visit Indonesian representative offices abroad. This ease is reflected in the gradual recovery of foreign citizens visiting Indonesia.

The Directorate General of Immigration aims to facilitate foreigners in applying for Indonesian visas online, aligning with President Joko Widodo’s directive to enhance services through digitization.

This new visa policy is expected to attract more high-quality foreign visitors to Indonesia, aligning with the practices of other countries such as Australia and Europe, which mandate visas for entry by foreign citizens.

Multiple Entry Visa vs Single Entry Visa, which one is better for my Indonesia travel in 2024?

Choosing visas for your visit to Indonesia in 2023-2024 depends on several factors, including:

Your planned travel duration:

  • Single entry: Valid for a maximum stay of 60 days or 180 days, depending on the type you choose. Suitable if you’re only planning one trip to Indonesia during this period.
  • Multiple entry: Valid for a maximum period of 1 year with a maximum stay of 60 days per visit. Ideal if you plan multiple trips to Indonesia within the validity period.

Your travel purpose:

  • Single entry: Sufficient for short tourist visits, attending events, or visiting family/friends.
  • Multiple entry: More convenient for business trips, frequent visits for medical reasons, or extended stays for leisure.

Cost and processing time:

  • Single entry: Generally cheaper and faster to process than a multiple trip visa.
  • Multiple entry: More expensive and may require additional documentation and longer processing times.

Here’s a table summarizing the key differences:

Feature Single-entry Visa Multiple-entry Visa
Validity 60 days or 180 days 1 year
Maximum stay per visit 60 days or 180 days 60 days
Suitable for One trip Multiple trips within a year
Travel purpose Tourist visits, events, family/friends Business trips, frequent visits, extended stays
Cost Cheaper More expensive
Processing time Faster Longer
  • If you only plan one trip to Indonesia during this period and your stay will be less than 180 days, a single-entry visa is the most cost-effective option.
  • If you plan multiple trips to Indonesia within a year or require longer stays, a multiple-entry visa would be more convenient.
  • Consider the cost and processing time difference when making your decision.
