Kazakhstan and Macau Now Eligible for Visa-Free Travel to Indonesia

Indonesia has officially expanded its Visa-Free Visit (Bebas Visa Kunjungan BVK) to citizens of Kazakhstan and Macau.

The announcement follows a coordination meeting involving the Coordinating Ministry for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Corrections, alongside representatives from the Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Immigration and Corrections, and Ministry of Law.

While the move is expected to make travel to Indonesia easier for visitors from both jurisdictions, officials have emphasised that visa-free policies remain subject to careful evaluation and reciprocal international relations.

For travellers, tourism businesses, and foreign investors watching Indonesia’s immigration landscape, the expansion signals the government’s continued commitment to balancing accessibility with responsible border management.

Visa-free entry remains one of the most effective tools for stimulating tourism and facilitating short-term international travel. Under Indonesia’s Visa-Free Visit programme, eligible foreign nationals can enter the country without applying for a visa beforehand, provided they comply with the permitted activities and immigration requirements.

Factors Considered Before Granting Visa-Free Access

  • Reciprocity for Indonesian citizens abroad
  • Immigration compliance records
  • National security interests
  • Economic and investment potential
  • Tourism growth opportunities
  • Bilateral diplomatic relations

Potential Benefits of the New Policy

Benefit Impact
Simplified travel planning No visa application required before departure
Faster immigration processing Reduced administrative requirements
Increased tourism arrivals More international visitors
Enhanced business connectivity Easier access for meetings and exploration
Stronger bilateral relationships Improved international cooperation

While visa-free access removes the visa application process, travellers remain subject to Indonesian immigration regulations and entry requirements upon arrival.

Several Countries Remain Under Review

The expansion does not stop with Kazakhstan and Macau.

During the same discussions, government agencies reviewed proposals involving several additional countries, including:

  • Japan
  • South Korea
  • India
  • Australia
  • New Zealand

Authorities are also evaluating a proposal that would allow Australian permanent residents to access Indonesia’s Visa on Arrival programme. However, no final decision has yet been announced regarding these proposals. Further studies are required before additional countries can be formally approved.

Indonesia Maintains a Selective Immigration Policy

Although Indonesia continues introducing more traveller-friendly initiatives, immigration authorities remain committed to strict screening and supervision procedures.

Visa-free entry does not guarantee automatic admission. Every foreign national remains subject to immigration inspection upon arrival, and entry may be refused if regulatory requirements are not met.

Key Priorities of Indonesia’s Immigration Framework

  • National security
  • Immigration compliance
  • Prevention of visa misuse
  • Economic contribution
  • Tourism development
  • International cooperation

The Directorate General of Immigration has repeatedly emphasised that visa facilitation measures must remain balanced with effective border control and regulatory enforcement.
