Indonesia to Launch Full E-Passport Issuance Effective December 2024

Jakarta – The Directorate General of Immigration under the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections (Kemimpas) is set to roll out full-scale issuance of electronic passports (e-passports) in Indonesia. The initiative will begin at 13 selected immigration offices across the country starting 1 December 2024.

This marks a significant step forward for Indonesia’s immigration system, as the transition to e-passports aligns with global standards for travel documents.

Acting Director-General of Immigration, Saffar M. Godam, highlighted the milestone during a statement issued on Monday, 2 December 2024.

“From 1 December 2024, all Indonesian citizens applying for passports at the 13 designated immigration offices will automatically receive electronic passports. Our ultimate aim is to implement this system across all immigration offices nationwide,” Godam explained.

Pilot Locations for E-Passport Issuance

The following immigration offices have been designated as pilot locations for this phase of implementation:

  1. Soekarno-Hatta Immigration Office
  2. South Jakarta Immigration Office
  3. West Jakarta Immigration Office
  4. Medan Immigration Office
  5. Batam Immigration Office
  6. Makassar Immigration Office
  7. Tangerang Immigration Office
  8. Surabaya Immigration Office
  9. Ngurah Rai Immigration Office (Bali)
  10. East Jakarta Immigration Office
  11. Central Jakarta Immigration Office
  12. North Jakarta Immigration Office
  13. Tanjung Priok Immigration Office

Benefits of Using E-Passport

E-passport, also known as biometric passport, is an advancement of regular passport that incorporates an electronic chip that securely stores the holder’s biometric data, such as facial features and fingerprints. These features are encrypted using advanced security technology, making the document highly resistant to forgery. Additional security elements, such as specialised inks and holograms, add further protection.

Godam emphasised that the introduction of e-passports offers multiple advantages. “The enhanced security features minimise the risk of misuse, and the streamlined immigration process ensures faster border crossings, particularly in countries that have adopted automated passport control systems compatible with chip readers,” he stated.

E-Passport to be the new standard of International Travel

The adoption of e-passports aligns Indonesia with international standards for travel documentation. Most countries around the world have now implemented e-passports, recognising their role in secure and efficient border management.

Godam stressed that the transition is not merely a technological upgrade but also a strategic move to strengthen the Indonesian passport. The combination of high-tech materials and advanced security techniques ensures that Indonesian passports remain reliable and robust for international travel.
