Indonesia Visa on Arrival for Australian Citizens 2024

Indonesia Visa on Arrival for Australian Citizens 2024

Indonesia has been one of the most popular destinations for Australian citizens in terms of tourism. Many concerns have been raised due to the recent COVID-19 outbreak and immigration to other countries has come under scrutiny. The question of how Australians can enter Indonesia during the coronavirus outbreak is one of the main concerns.

The Indonesian government will implement stricter policies such as health advisories, medical certificates, and other measures to reduce the risk of allowing entry of people infected with the disease and further spreading the pandemic.

As of April 2022, an Indonesian Health Alert Card is no longer required to enter the country, however, visas are still required in terms of entering Indonesia.

Do Australians need a visa to enter Indonesia?

Indonesia imposes some special regulations regarding visits from countries from the Asian and European continents. As Australia is on the list, there are no special regulations that Australians who wish to enter Indonesia should be aware of.

Previously, Australians were able to enter Indonesia using visa exemption, granting them a 30-day visa-free stay along with 168 other countries. However, due to the pandemic, Indonesia now only grants visa exemptions to a few countries in Southeast Asia, namely: Brunei Darussalam, Phillippines, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Timor Leste as of February 2023.

Other than the mentioned countries, travellers must have Indonesian visas to enter Indonesia.

Indonesia Visa on Arrival is the best substitute Visa Exemption

There’s no doubt that applying for an Indonesian visa can be a hassle, especially with the amount of paperwork and steps involved. So for Australians who want to visit Indonesia for less than 30 days without any hassle, Visa on Arrival is the right choice.

How much is an Indonesia Visa on Arrival?

Unlike Visa exemption, applying for a visa on arrival requires you to pay USD $35 or IDR 500,000 for the visa. The registration payment can be done manually upon arrival, or online if your country is e-visa compliant.

When do Australians need a Visa on Arrival?

Keep in mind that visa exemption no longer applies to Australians travelling to Indonesia, so for quick visits, VoA is likely the most practical option.

However, using VoA does not allow you to stay longer than 60 days in Indonesia. While staying using this visa, you also cannot apply for another type of visa. Therefore, to stay longer and be able to apply for another visa, consider using a Single Entry Visa.

Overstaying a VoA will lead you to a penalty. Penalties for overstaying a visa have increased from 300,000 to 1,000,000 IDR per day, according to the new immigration regulation.

Leaving Jakarta and returning using another Visa on Arrival

This option may seem viable, but multiple entries are not recommended in any way. Immigration authorities may detain foreigners who try to consecutively enter Indonesia using different VoA applications.

If you want to spend more time in Indonesia, we would simply recommend using a Single Entry visa. That way you save the headache of travelling forwards and backwards frequently and save on multiple flight costs. Learn how to apply for a Single Entry Visa here.
