Papua New Guinea Is Now Eligible For Visa on Arrival Indonesia (VoA)

In a significant development, as of September 2023, Papua New Guinea can find itself on the esteemed list of nations eligible for Visa on Arrival (VoA) when visiting Indonesia. This momentous addition represents not only a remarkable expansion of international relations but also a gateway to fostering more significant economic and cultural exchanges between these two neighbouring nations.

Indonesian Immigration Office has announced broadening its Visa on Arrival (VoA) and e-voa (electronic visa on arrival) program to include citizens of Papua New Guinea, following Armenia, Mozambique and Tanzania that have been added prior to the country.

Papua New Guinea’s inclusion in Indonesia’s Visa on Arrival list marks a significant step in fostering cultural exchanges, tourism, and business ties between the two nations. This development simplifies travel for Papua New Guinean citizens and strengthens the bonds of friendship and cooperation between these Southeast Asian neighbours.

Below is the nationality list that are eligible to enter Indonesia with a Visa on Arrival:

Legal Framework for Visa on Arrival in Indonesia

Indonesia’s decision to grant Visa on Arrival to Papua New Guinea is grounded in a well-defined legal framework. The key documents that substantiate this change are as follows:

  1. Minister of Law and Human Rights Decree No. M.HH-04.GR.01.06 of 2023: This decree outlines the list of countries and Special Administrative Region Governments eligible for Visa on Arrival during their arrival in Indonesia.
  2. Directorate General of Immigration Circular Letter No. IMI-0244.GR.01.01: This circular provides insights into immigration policies regarding Visa and Limited Stay Permits during the transition period of the COVID-19 pandemic, including Visa on Arrival.
  3. Ministry of Finance Regulation No. 157/PMK.02/2022: This regulation defines the mechanism for the non-tax state revenue from abroad concerning immigration services, including Visa fees.

Understanding Visa on Arrival (VoA) in Indonesia

Visa on Arrival (VoA) is a travel convenience that allows eligible foreign nationals to obtain a visa upon their arrival at certain Indonesian entry points, including international airports and seaports. It is designed to facilitate short visits for tourism, business, and social purposes.

Key Features of VoA in Indonesia:

  1. Duration: VoA grants travellers a maximum stay of 30 days, which can be extended for an additional 30 days if needed.
  2. Eligibility: VoA is typically available to citizens of countries listed by the Indonesian government. Papua New Guinea’s inclusion on this list is a recent and significant development, opening doors for its citizens to explore Indonesia more conveniently.
  3. Fee: The Visa on Arrival fee must be paid upon arrival, and it is subject to change. It’s crucial to have the fee ready in the accepted currency (usually USD).
  4. Non-Extendable: While the initial stay can be extended, VoA itself cannot be extended beyond the maximum 60 days.
  5. Purpose: VoA can be used for various purposes, including tourism, business meetings, and attending conferences or social events.

Requirements to obtain Visa on Arrival in Indonesia

According to Immigration regulations, to be eligible for VoA foreigners are required to present the following documents at the immigration counter:

1. A passport valid for at least 6 months.
2. Either a return ticket or a connecting ticket for onward travel to another country.

It’s important to note that foreign visitors would need to pay for the VoA upon receipt. The cost to obtain a Visa on arrival is IDR 500,000 or USD 35.
